TRUE LOVE

1 Peter 1:22

David and the rest of the battalion crossed the Valley of Salt as they traveled east. They walked along the two−mile wide Valley of the Arnon River. To their left was the territory of Reuben, and to their right the country of Moab.

“David, it’s been seven days, and we still haven’t found the remaining Philistine regiment in this God−forsaken valley.” Benaiah was tired and irritated.

“Benaiah, be patient. We must make sure the Philistines never cross this part of our land again,” Abishai said.

As David and his battalion searched the Valley of the Arnon River, a man from the country of Moab yelled at them from the top of the valley. “Do you come in peace?”

“That depends on how you answer, Moabite!” David shouted back. “What’s your name?”

“My name’s Ithmah, and a proud Moabite I may add.”

“As you should be. My great−great uncle is the King of Moab. Though I haven’t met him, I hear he’s a just king.”

“He is. So that means you’re the son of Jesse?”

“Yes. My name’s David. Have you seen a descendant of the Anakim? He was traveling by chariot with some Philistines along this river.”

“David? The king says that you’re the anoi−” Ithmah could not finish his statement, because from the territory of Reuben a man yelled. “Captain, I have what you’re looking for. Leave my friend the Moabite alone!”

“And who might you be?” David asked, as he turned to the direction of the voice.

“I’m Adina son of Shiza, a Reubenite, chief of the thirty mightiest Reubenites.”

“What do you mean you have what I’m looking for?”

“The Nephilim and the Philistines were in such a hurry that they left their slaves behind. That’s what you’ve been looking for right, captain?”

“No. We want the Nephilim and the Philistines. We had no idea they had slaves with them. Where are the slaves?”

“They should be by the end of the river, next to the King’s Highway.”

“How long have they been there?”

“About six or seven days, but they should be dead by now. They’ve been shackled without food or water.”

“What? Adina, if those slaves are dead, their blood will be on your head. Do you have no fear of the Lord?”

“Why yes, but they’re only Gentile slaves.”

“How are we to show the love of God to them? Are you not to lead your men by example?”

At once, Adina the Reubenite was heart−stricken. He thought he was doing the right thing, but to whom? David’s words convicted him; he did not turn to look at his men because of the shame he felt.
